A Dictionary of “Tar Heel Places”

Powell’s North Carolina Gazetteer calls itself  “a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet,” and it’s a wonderful resource for current information as well as for historical trivia. In addition to finding out when a town was incorporated or which county it’s in, you can satisfy your need to know such things as:  the “Sahara of North Carolina” is the Sandhills region between the Cape Fear and PeeDee Rivers, and “No Ache Bay” is on the western shore of Hatteras Island in Dare County and “Beaucatcher Mountain” in Asheville was so-named because a summer house/arbor there was popular with courting couples in the 1800s.  Copies of the Gazetteer are available in both Libraries for your browsing pleasure or serious research!

Economic Stimulus Resources

The Library has just received American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009: Law, Explanation, and Analysis from CCH Publishers.  This guidebook gives summaries as well as explanations of each provision of this massive economic stimulus package that was signed by the President on February 17, 2009.  Also, you can find additional information on this law by visiting the NCSL website at: http://www.ncsl.org/statefed/2009economicstimulus.htm

Looking for Biographical Information for General Assembly Members?

The North Carolina Manual, published by the N. C. Department of the Secretary of State, is a popular resource for biographical summaries of members and officials of the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches of state government.  Published biannually since the early 1900’s, this reference also contains historical data and descriptions of North Carolina’s state agencies.
